Plenty of families want a ride on and do not have a double garage to keep it in. Most 12V cars are 42 to 49 in long and will not go through a doorway without a struggle.

This one is 38.5 in long and 19 in wide, which is narrower than a standard interior door frame. It can live in a hallway, a spare room or a storage locker, and still carries the two motor drive, the suspension and the remote that a bigger car has.

Small car proportions

A coupe shape rather than a box, with silver wheels, slim headlamps and the four ring badge on the nose. The bodywork is a single gloss black, so scuffs show less than on a two tone shell.

The measurements

38.5 in long, 19 in wide and 17 in tall, with a seat 12.5 in across, 7.5 in deep and a 9.5 in back. Nineteen inches of width is narrow enough to pass a standard interior doorway.

How it pulls away

The maker's curve puts a gradual ramp against a normal start. It is the difference between a first drive that goes well and one that ends with a child refusing to get back in.

The console

A speaker panel with music play, song selection, volume control and a power display. The buttons are moulded into the same panel, so there is nothing loose to break off. A battery indicator on the same panel shows what is left before the next charge.

The maker states an official licence, with badged grille, wheels and plate.

On a rechargeable 12V battery at a published 1.86 to 3.1 mph.

Parent control mode, with manual mode as the alternative.

The maker's curve shows speed rising gently rather than jumping.

Four treaded wheels on shock absorbers.

Music play, song selection, volume and a power display.

Nineteen inches of width and 38.5 in of length is the smallest footprint of any two motor car in our 12V range.

Asphalt, cobbled road and wooden floor are the three the maker names, with shock absorbers on all four wheels.

The soft start and the three speed remote give an adult a way to keep the first few sessions slow. The car will not move at all until the power switch is on, so nothing starts by accident.

What we stand behind

• Speed, motor and battery ratings, dimensions and seat size are the manufacturer's published figures.
• The manufacturer states this is an officially licensed Audi SQ8 design.
• No age range and no weight capacity is published for this model, so neither is stated.
• No run time, charge time or remote control range is published.
• A toy for supervised play on private property. Never on a road, a sidewalk or a bike path.

How big is it?

38.5 in long, 19 in wide and 17 in tall, with a seat 12.5 in across and 7.5 in deep.

How fast does it go?

1.86 to 3.1 mph, with three speed settings on the parent remote.

What age is it for?

The manufacturer does not publish an age range or a weight capacity for this model, so we cannot state one. The seat measures 12.5 in by 7.5 in with a 9.5 in back.

Is it really an Audi?

The manufacturer states an official Audi SQ8 licence, and the badging on the grille, the wheels and the plate follows it.

What surfaces suit it?

Asphalt, cobbled road and wooden floor are the three the maker names, on four treaded wheels with shock absorbers.
