Two 13 inch units can line up, split across a room or turn a corner, whatever the next room needs.
This is two bookcases, not one. Each is 13 inches square in plan and 40 inches tall, with three cubes stacked inside it. Side by side they read as a single six cube unit. Split up, one goes beside the bed and the other beside the desk, which is harder to do with a single frame.
Together they look like one
Pushed up against each other the cubes line up and the join is a single line. The asymmetric cube openings stop the pair looking like a plain grid, which is what most cube storage ends up as.
Or turn a corner
Set at right angles they wrap a corner that a long bookcase cannot use. Each unit is 13 inches deep, so neither one reaches far into the room, and both stay reachable from the same spot.
